These earrings are hand-tatted with a beautiful, vibrant blue crochet cotton.  The flowers measure just under 2 inches in diameter.  They are very lightweight and hang on handmade French hook earwires.  The tatting has been stiffened with starch to help keep their form.

Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a durable lace by making a series of knots and loops.  Tatting is traditionally made with a shuttle, although it has become popular to use a needle to craft this beautiful lace.  Tatting is used to make lace edging, doillies, collars and other decorative pieces.  The lace is made with a pattern of rings and chains formed from a series of half-hitch knots, called double stitches, over a core thread.  Picots are added to the pattern both for construction and decorative purposes.  Tatting dates to the early 19th century.  It is also known as frivolite.
